Group Therapy

More affordable, less isolating, and as effective as individual therapy.

Why Group Therapy?

Group therapy is a powerful tool for growth and healing. It can address feelings of shame, stigma, or isolation more effectively than individual therapy by showing you that you are not alone. Research confirms it is just as effective as individual therapy, but at a lower cost.

Led by a highly trained psychologist who ensures a safe and supportive environment, group therapy helps you:

  • Enhance self-awareness and personal growth.

  • Learn from others' experiences and perspectives.

  • Develop interpersonal/social skills and confidence.

  • Gain a sense of belonging and community.

Experience the benefits of shared understanding and collective progress. Group therapy offers a unique and valuable path to mental well-being.

How Does Group Therapy Work?

Group therapy is a unique and effective process that combines professional guidance with peer support. Unlike support or self-help groups, it is led by a trained psychologist who introduces evidence-based psychological strategies. The group works together to explore and implement these strategies, fostering self-awareness and learning from one another’s perspectives.

Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes and provide a safe space for participants to openly share challenges, insights, and goals. Some of the groups follow a more structured program than others. Either way, through these discussions, members gain new skills to address their concerns, improve relationships, and promote personal growth.

1. Expression of Interest: Begin by completing the expression of interest form online.

2. Initial Discussion: A member of the Unburden Psychology team will contact you to schedule a brief conversation with the psychologist to discuss your challenges and goals.

3. Questionnaires: Complete some online forms to help the psychologist understand your needs.

4. Group Formation: Once a complementary group is established, you’ll receive details about meeting times, duration, and fees. This may take some time to find the best group for you.

5. Payment: Sessions are paid upfront in blocks, and payments are non-refundable for missed sessions.  Any eligible Medicare rebates are processed per session on the day of attendance.

How Are Group Members Selected?

Group members are thoughtfully chosen to ensure a supportive and effective experience for everyone. The psychologist carefully considers each person’s challenges, goals, and communication style to form a group of individuals likely to work well together and address similar concerns.

This selection process begins with an initial discussion and the completion of online forms and questionnaires. These steps help the psychologist understand your needs and preferences. While availability is also taken into account, specific time preferences may not always be possible.

In the first session, the group will collaboratively establish rules to create a safe and respectful space. If a member struggles to follow these rules, the psychologist will address the situation to ensure the group remains beneficial and supportive for all participants.
