Child and Adolescent Psychology
Growing up is not always easy. When your child or teenager is struggling, we are here to help them feel understood, build confidence and find their way back to being themselves
Children and young people can carry big feelings, worry, low mood, friendship and school stress, changes at home, or the effects of difficult experiences. It can be hard to watch, and hard to know how to help. Our team offers warm, patient support designed around young people, in a space where they feel safe, respected and genuinely heard.
Why choose Unburden for your child or teen?
We are experienced, evidence-based practitioners, and several of our psychologists have a particular passion for working with children and adolescents. We use creativity, curiosity and age-appropriate approaches to help young people make sense of their experiences, develop emotional understanding, and build the resilience and confidence to navigate the changes of growing up. We work collaboratively with parents, and with schools and other professionals where helpful.

Most of our work with young people is one-on-one, individual therapy tailored to their age and stage. For select clients we may also offer group therapy, which can be a supportive way for young people to build skills alongside others. If a group could suit your child, let us know and we will be in touch when a suitable one is forming.
Experienced practitioners
Our team includes experienced psychologists, clinical psychologists, registrars, psychotherapists and counsellors with a wide range of areas of interest and experience.
A calm, supportive environment
Sessions take place in a private, welcoming and unhurried space.
The right therapist for your child or teen
You don't need to work out who to see on your own. We take the time to understand what your child or teen needs and thoughtfully match them with the right therapist.

How to choose a therapist

You're welcome to browse the therapist profiles below and choose who feels right for your child or teen.

With a fairly large team to choose from, though, it can be easier to give us a call first. Our Client Experience Officers are specially trained in matching clients with the right therapist, and know each one well: their interests, their style, and the clients they tend to work best with. A short chat is enough for them to point you toward a good fit.

No matching process is perfect every time, but our specially trained team is good at reducing that risk. If you're still not sure after your first session, let them work with you again to find a better match.

Getting started is simple
Request an appointment
Once you send your request, a member of our team will reach out with any details we need to get your child booked in.
We'll thoughtfully match
We will match your child thoughtfully. We pair your child with the psychologist who is the best fit for them and their needs, and with the earliest availability we have.
Sessions begin
We will book three weekly sessions to begin. Starting with three sessions close together helps build momentum and trust early on, when it matters most.
Once sessions are underway, we ease into a rhythm that suits your child. Once therapy is underway, sessions may not be weekly. The frequency depends on your child’s needs and the psychologist’s suggestions. You can change therapists at any time. If you ever feel another psychologist would be a better fit for your child, just tell us and we will happily accommodate you.

A calm place to feel supported
We want coming to therapy to feel as comfortable as possible. Sessions are held in a private, calm and welcoming environment, with the time and space to talk without feeling rushed.

When you arrive, we'll offer you a complimentary refreshment. There is also a cafe downstairs if you would like to arrive a little early, grab something to drink and take a moment to settle in before your appointment.

It's a small thing, but we believe the environment surrounding therapy matters too.
Therapy tailored to your child or teen
We tailor our approach to each young person, drawing on evidence-based methods such as CBT, ACT, play-based and creative techniques, trauma-informed therapy and mindfulness. To learn more about how these work and what might suit your child, visit our Types of Therapy page
Do I need a referral?
You do not need a referral to book for your child, though you are welcome to use one.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate?
With a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, your child may be eligible for a Medicare rebate
How much are sessions?
Our fees vary depending on the practitioner you see. Current session fees, Medicare rebate information and details about other funding options are available on our Fees & Rebates page.
