Couples Therapy

When you keep having the same argument, or you're starting to feel more like flatmates than partners.

Who couples therapy can help

Every relationship goes through hard patches. Couples therapy can help if you:

  • keep having the same arguments and never quite resolve them

  • feel disconnected, lonely in the relationship, or like you've drifted apart

  • are struggling to talk about the big things without it turning into a fight

  • are rebuilding trust after an affair or betrayal

  • are navigating a big change together, such as a new baby, a blended family, illness, retirement or a move

  • aren't sure whether to stay together, and want to work that out properly

You don't have to be in crisis. Many couples come to us simply because they want to understand each other better and stop small things turning into big ones. And it's fine if only one of you is sure about coming. That's very common.

How it works

Part 1: Initial assessment and relationship mapping

A 90-minute joint session where each of you has dedicated time to talk about what's working, what's hard and what you'd like to change.

Fee: $442.50

Part 2: In-depth assessment and personalised roadmap

Each of you completes a questionnaire and has a confidential 45-minute individual session. We then meet together for a 90-minute feedback session covering your strengths, strain points, the patterns that keep repeating, and a clear roadmap forward.

Fee: $1,220

Part 3: Ongoing couples therapy

Sessions focused on communication, handling conflict, rebuilding trust and reconnecting, guided by your roadmap.

Fee: $290 per ongoing session

Parts 1 and 2 can be purchased as a package deal

Psychology & more

Why Unburden Psychology & More

Our couples therapists don't take sides. Their job is to help you both understand what's really going on underneath the arguments, and give you practical tools to change it. Having a psychologist as your couples therapist is a real advantage. Their training goes well beyond relationship skills. They're also trauma-informed, and understand how past experiences, from childhood or earlier relationships, can shape the way you react to each other today.

Because we're a whole team under one roof, you can also see your own individual therapist alongside couples sessions if what's happening for you personally and in the relationship are tangled together. We have both male and female therapists, sessions at Graceville and Rocklea, and some out-of-hours appointments.

Couples therapy isn't the right fit where there is family violence or someone feels unsafe. If that's your situation, please let us know and we'll help you find the right individual support.

Who offers couples therapy

Couples therapy is offered by Dr Hannibal Thai and Emma Tuxworth, both fully qualified, registered psychologists. With a male and a female therapist to choose from, you can pick who you'll both feel most comfortable with.
