ANXIETY

When your mind won't switch off, and your body won't settle.

It's 2am and you're awake again. Your body is exhausted but your mind won't stop: the email you sent yesterday, something a friend said, whether that ache in your chest means something. You know most of it probably won't happen. Knowing that doesn't help.

During the day it shows up differently. Perhaps your stomach hurts or is unsettled. Perhaps you have trouble concentrating, or find yourself snapping at those around you. You’re tired, all the time. Sometimes a sense of panic or a wave of anxiety hits out of nowhere: a racing heart in the supermarket queue, a tight chest, a sudden need to get out. You might avoid meeting or talking to people, or being involved in opportunities, and then you’re overthinking again.

People tell you to just relax. If it were that easy, you would have done it already.

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to see us. It isn't a character flaw or a sign you're not coping. It's your body's alarm system working overtime, and there is a lot we can do to help it settle.

Psychology & more

How Unburden can help

It isn’t all in your head. Your racing thoughts are one, very frustrating thing that is happening to you. However anxiety is also in the body. So Unburden has developed a ‘Psychology & More’ approach that looks at both body and mind.

There's no one right place to start. Some people need relief quickly, others want to get straight to what's driving their anxiety, and many people find a mix of both works best.

Quick relief when you need it

When anxiety is running high, it can be hard to think about anything else. Some of our services work quickly to calm your nervous system, giving you enough breathing room to start working on what's underneath.

A quick nervous system reset can be achieved through acupuncture. It's definitely worth a try for the chronically or highly anxious, and many people notice a difference straight away.

Breathwork sessions teach you slow, structured breathing, one of the quickest ways to calm a racing heart and switch off the stress response. It's a skill you can take anywhere, including into that supermarket queue.

Anxiety is held in the body too. Trauma-sensitive yoga with a specialist teacher, one-on-one or in very small groups, gently helps your body learn to settle, and can be particularly helpful for chronic anxiety.

Getting to the root cause

Many people find help through individual therapy, where one of our psychologists or counsellors works with you to discover what's driving your anxiety. Our therapists are highly qualified and therefore able to select from a range of therapies to find one that works best for you. Every psychologist at Unburden is also trained to understand and treat trauma, which often sits underneath anxiety. We aim to make this both a practical and insightful experience, so that you don't feel like this for the rest of your life.

Gut health plays a strong role in anxiety given the body-based symptoms. This can be addressed through analysis with our naturopath, or a practical and realistic diet review with our gut-health dietitian.

Connecting with others

Connecting with others is an important way to treat anxiety, so we strongly recommend joining one of our group therapy programs or workshops. If you're new to this, our anxiety reduction workshop is a great place to start, and if you'd like to build on those skills, our six-week Anxiety Group gives you the time and support to really put them into practice.

Finding the right mix for you

You're welcome to put together your own holistic program, or speak to the Client Experience Officers or your therapist about what might work best for you. If you're taking, or thinking about, medication for anxiety, we're also happy to work alongside your GP so everyone is on the same page.

Rewire Your Anxious Brain
by Catherine M. Pittman and Elizabeth M. Karle

1

An easy to read, step by step self help book that shows you how to stop wrestling with anxious thoughts and get on with the things that matter to you. This is a key book for the therapy style of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which has strong research. Our therapists like ACT, though realise it works superbly for some clients, not so much for others.

The Happiness Trap
by Dr Russ Harris

2

Treats worry as a habit loop and uses curiosity and mindfulness to break it.

Unwinding Anxiety
